Intro to Cake Decorating…My First Students!

On Saturday, I had my first experience teaching a group of fine ladies a little bit about cake decorating.  For those of you who actually decorate for a living, you know that the learning really comes from DOING (over, and over, and OVER) but a nice introductory course is a great way to get started.  Hopefully everyone learned enough to go home and put to practice a few new tricks (icing borders, mousse fillings, roses, stars, etc.) so that they can make their cakes a little fancier when it comes time to take something to a church social or bake their kids a birthday cake.cakeclasscakes

We also touched on ways to fancy up cupcakes – something that should be in every Mom’s repertoire – because everyone knows that the “cool moms” bring the funkiest cupcakes. It just takes a tiny bit more effort to reach the”Cool Mom” status…so worth it!

I was really impressed with my students creations – I was not a WIlton nazi that forced everyone to make the same thing – and most importantly, I was impressed with how each of them was so adept at trying things themselves. They were so independent!  I would be helping one person with a shell border, and over in the corner I had gals making roses or writing before I even got back over to them – how awesome is that?

Of the seven students I had in class, most will be joining be for next months course where we learn about fondant, how to do a few tricks with chocolate, and a little bit of sugar work. Nothing drastic, but a LOT of fun to learn and the best part is getting to PLAY!cakeclass1

If any of you ladies are reading, I’d love for you to leave a comment and let me know what YOU took from the class. Positive or negative, I want to hear it all!

Thanks so much!

For those of you in the area who are interested in taking a Cake Decorating Course, please let me know. There is a tab over on the scroll bar where you can email me…my March 27th Class is full, but I have had interest from several people so I would be willing to set up as many classes as necessary to get all of you in – I just need to know how many!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend – and GO USA HOCKEY!!
