Tuesdays With Dorie…Apple Cheddar Scones

I don’t like scones. Um, ever. I make them for the Cafe, but never eat them. They are bland, not a texture I enjoy, and not sweet…and to me, baked goods are supposed to be sweet. So I thought about opting out this week – not to mention, I still have a big portion of the kitchen ceiling missing from the ginormous water leak that took place here last week. But I still decided that I wanted to be a GOOD TWDer…and not skip. What if it was fantablous? What if it became my favorite thing to make and I never even tried? Well…I tried.

I don’t like scones.

These were unlike any scones I’ve made. Sticky, gooey, messy nonsense. I did have to make a couple of changes, as I am poor and a trip to the store, if I were able to afford the gas to have gotten there, would have been more than my poor budget could have managed. So, I took Dorie’s advice and used her sub for the buttermilk with a yogurt/milk combo. I also only had white corn meal, not yellow. Dried apples I know do not exist here in town, as I looked last week. So I diced a granny smith, added some vanilla sugar and lemon juice, and sat it out in the sun to dry a little. (That tasted yummy, by the way!) Lastly – not unsweetened apple juice – I had to use some of Seven’s Gerber Apple Juice instead. So there.

Then I threw everything together according to the recipe – and the mess ensued. I didn’t add extra flour, as I assumed Dorie knew that these messy things would form scones. Well, when trying to portion it out and CUT it – you must be kidding. I was lucky to scoop it out and plop in on the baking sheet. I ended up with 7 large “biscuits’ and a couple of babies just to fill up the pan. I baked them for 20 minutes – and she was right – they tuned out fine. But still…

I don’t like scones.

I ate one whole one just to be sure. Seven liked it alot, but then again, I caught him eating dogfood out of the dog bowl earlier today. Yum Yum, he said. But back to the scones…They just kind of taste like a cheesy biscuit to me. I can barely taste the apple, but when I can, that to me is the best part. Maybe they need a lot of butter on the side? Cream cheese? What?? I don’t drink coffee or milk – and I don’t see these going with a big glass of Diet DP.

But hey, I made them, right? And so did all of the other TWDers…so head on over and check out what they all did! Next week we are working with Blueberries…it’s a pie people! Now THAT’S something I can get into!!
