Another Good Reason to Get Moving

I am fascinated by people who like to run.

I used to see them when driving through the Virginia Tech Campus. I could understand it, maybe, if it were pleasant outside…but at 20 degrees? Or in the rain? Or snow?

Me? I see a day like that and I pull up the covers. But runners must be made of something other than that…maybe after you run and run your body starts releasing all of these wicked voodoo hormones and life starts to feel fine. I wouldn’t know. I’ve never wanted to run that far. In fact, to put it as Val Kilmer did in his best movie to date – “Real Genius” – I run when chased. Luckily no one or nothing chases me that often.

But maybe one of you running readers would like to explain it to me. Am I missing something?

And why am I choosing to post about something like exercise? I know, so unlike me. But I have my reasons…

One being, I need to get in better shape for the summer. A swimsuit is not my friend right now. Not even an acquaintance…more like a backstabbing homecoming queen. My swimsuit may not even fit right now, if we’re being totally honest. So, that being said, I do kind of enjoy the treadmill. I prefer it to actual outdoors walking. So sue me! I just don’t dig it outside. All that fresh air? No thanks. I’d rather walk and watch Oprah. That way, I can just stop and go to the bathroom anytime I want.

Two being this…

Bumble Bee Foods is trying to get all of us off our hibernating butts. And for a great cause, as if being healthy for health sake isn’t enough (I know, sometimes it isn’t.) By registering at their site – BeeWell Miles and entering in the amount of miles you walk or run each day, they will donate a whopping 15 cents per mile to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength, who provide emotional support to those who can’t wait for tomorrow’s cure. It’s a great program, for sure.

So, I got a pedometer to wear and logged in my miles for the past two days on the site…so far, 90 cents will be donated. If we all take a minute to enter our info, we can make a huge contribution, just for being alive and walking! I even went outside and walked– see? It continues through October, so I am thinking that I alone will be contributing around $100. That’s a nice little chunk of change…and a very worthy donation amount. Bumble Bee will be donating up to $200,000 – as long as we all do our part and get moving.

So, if you are one of those “runner people”…or even a person like me who is looking for a kick in the tail -sign up for sure! Who knows how much you could be contributing! Plus (and this is such a cool feature) – on the BeeWell Miles site there is a place where you can use aerial maps to show your favorite walking/running routes – and they will calculate the distance for you. You really need to take a look!
