Tuesdays With Dorie…Banana Cream Pie & A Giveaway

So…Banana Cream Pie. Don’t think I have ever eaten it. I know, right? Where’ve I been?

I don’t know.

Don’t get me wrong…I like bananas. Sort of. I’ll eat them…they just aren’t my favorite fruit. They get icky too fast. For me, they have to be perfectly yellow, no brown, no green. So that gives me, oh, about a 42 minute window to consume them once they hit perfection.

Granted, I am usually doing something else when those 42 minutes occur. It happens.

But Banana Cream Pie was our challenge for this week’s Tuesdays With Dorie, chosen by Amy of Sing for Your Supper…so I had to make it.
I wasn’t sure about it, but I gave it a go. Main reason being, I don’t like to miss TWD. I don’t get report cards anymore and that’s kind of a bummer…so getting comments is kind of like my own little report card. I like report cards.

Second reason being I just knew I had Dorie’s crust in my freezer. Knew it. So I pulled out the Ziploc, waited for it to defrost….

and it was sugar cookie dough.

No worries, though. I just smooshed it into some tart pans and went with it. Believe it or not, it worked pretty good and had a nice flavor with the bananas and cream. Like so many other commenters on the TWD site, I, too, ended up with my cream getting thick at lighning speed. I mean, one second I am all like – man, I should just go mow the yard as this cream thickens, it’s only an acre. But then I turn around and it’s thicker than flies in heat. So I had thick cream. It tasted good though. I’ll admit that I didn’t use the entire amount of cinnamon and nutmeg…those two are a little strong for me and remind me too much of Christmas. I like the way this tasted using only about half of the recommended recipe. Everything else I kept as Dorie suggests. Oh – you’ll also note that I used some Baby Red Bananas. These were tasty little boogers. I wish the grocery had them all the time, but here’s what really happened…our Food Lion got them by accident. Red Bananas in Giles County, Virginia equals Scary. Yellow equals Normal. Red equals Devil. I imagine I will not be showcasing other Baby Red Banana Recipes anytime soon. Just so you know.

You should scoot off and see how everyone else fared this week – from what I could gather, this recipe was a first for lots of Dorie Bakers!
But before you go, the moment you have all been waiting for…another giveaway!

This one is a doozy, folks.

Etsy Artist Shauna of The Way We Wear is allowing me to give away one of her FABULOUS Vintage Style Aprons. She sent me the Pinafore – and I just can’t tell you how gorgeous it is. Her craftsmanship is superb – she takes the details to a whole other level! I can hardly bring myself to wear it for fear of getting something on it…so now it is my dressy uppy apron. You know, for company. Because aprons are the bomb and everyone should have one. There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not in my apron. Maybe you are like that to. (if you aren’t you should be. Aprons rock.) I’ve even worn mine to the store before, but that was on accident. I just didn’t notice. (Of course, I also got almost to my car the other day wearing pink fuzzy slippers, but that’s beside the point.) What I am trying to say is – If you don’t have an apron or you are in the market for a newer one – get one of these. You will not be disappointed. She even does a frilly little stitch on all of the trim. No kidding! It’s too cute.
So what do you need to do to win one of your very own?
