Celebrating Local Eats…Peli Peli in Spring, Texas

I wrote this post as part of my participation in a blog tour on behalf of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division, the makers of PEPCID ®. I received compensation to thank me for taking the time to participate. However, all

opinions expressed are my own.

As you may or may not be aware, I have recently (well, less than two weeks ago) packed up everything I own and moved 1000 miles away, from Virginia to Texas.

It was a leap.

It has been a good one.

I am settling in to my new house, in my new life.  I’ve been getting out and about, decorating the walls and bathrooms, choosing rugs.  I’m learning how to navigate the massive interstate. The feeder roads, the gazillion traffic lights.  I’m finding my way.  And, as a new Spring, Texas resident, I am finding MY places.  My grocery store (still kind of working on that), my go-to lunch spot (hello, Mama Juanitas), my favorite dessert joint (BJ’s Pizookies are amazing), and my favorite fancy night out.

In steps Peli Peli.

The first time Mr. Texas took me to Peli Peli, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  South African Fusion?  Really?  An entire restaurant dedicated to such a small country?  What would they serve? Zebra? Hippo?

I feared for no reason.

I had one of the best meals I have ever eaten.  Incredible meats and flavorful side dishes.  Seasonings I am not used to, but thoroughly enjoyed.  Spices like cumin, saffron, peppery blends, curries…they all mixed and mingled creating bursts of deliciousness in every bite.  I chose the Filet Medallions with Six Signature Sauces, Sautéed Baby Spinach and Roasted Red Potatoes. My date chose wisely as well, by ordering Great Karoo Lamb Chops, which is 4 Lamb Chops with Lemon Juice, Peli Herb Mix and Homemade Mint Sauce.  Of course we shared, and both of us left incredibly happy!

Since my first time there, we have ventured back twice, and it is always a special experience.  The mood is exotic yet comfortable, the menu inspired and successful, the staff attentive yet unobtrusive. I adore it, and can’t wait until we head back.  Certainly we can come up with another reason for a fancy date?

Luckily, I was able to experience Peli Peli again a few weeks ago, courtesy of PEPCID ®.  Truth!  PEPCID ®, as part of their Tastemakers Celebrating Local Eats Program, offered to hook me up at Peli Peli for the night. With a cuisine as fanciful and rich as South African, one can never know what to expect!  Nothing kills a good time at a great restaurant like heartburn.  I swear, the older I have gotten, the more I deal with things like that.  And here I have just moved to Texas, land of everything spicy.  You can’t walk a straight line for more than 37 feet without wandering into another cantina or Taco Truck.  My mouth is on fire about 96 percent of the time these days.  So, PEPCID ® is kind of a lifesaver!  I just tuck it in my bag, just in case.  You never know!

As any local food-lover will tell you, heartburn is one thing they want to keep off the menu. There are many misconceptions and misunderstandings about what heartburn is and how you get heartburn. Visit http://www.pepcid.com/what-is- heartburn to learn more about heartburn and heartburn triggers.

What is heartburn? Heartburn happens when acid escapes from your stomach up into your esophagus. Unlike the stomach, the esophagus isn’t meant to house acid, so that’s when you feel the burn.

Food is the most common heartburn trigger. Your stomach may react to some foods by increasing acid production, slowing down digestion, or inhibiting the esophageal sphincter’s ability to prevent stomach contents from leaking back into the esophagus.

Heartburn triggers vary from person to person, but tomatoes, fatty foods, and coffee are among the usual suspects. Chocolate, garlic, raw onions, mints, vinegar, citrus fruits and juices, spicy foods, ketchup and mustard and alcohol are also culprits.

Who gets heartburn? (Besides me, that is?) Almost anyone can get heartburn. What triggers it varies from person to person, but some of the common causes can include diet, smoking, and being overweight.

PEPCID® Tastemakers Celebrating Local Eats

Welcome to Spring! I’ve lived around here most of my life, and in the past 5 years, it’s started growing so quickly! Looking for grocery stores, I really like H-E-B – they have the freshest produce I’ve found. If you can swing it, the Whole Foods in Vintage Park over by Peli Peli is always fun too! Hope you are settling in just fine (and weathered the recent rains alright). I look forward to reading more about your experiences in Texas, and of course, new recipes!
