My Kitchen, My World…Indonesia!
For this week’s MKMW, we are visiting Indonesia! Michelle of My Year to Get Skinny thought that after seeing all of the traveling chefs from there, the rest of us should give their cuisine a try! Guess what Michelle didn’t know?
Yep. I’ve been there.
Jon and I spent about a week there in 2001. Absolutely beautiful. We stayed in Bali at a gorgeous resort in Jimbaran Bay. I wish that everyone could go there! Everyday we lazed by the enormous hotel pool, listening to a steel drum band and waited for the ice cream vendor to come around with the BEST coconut icecream. The best.
One day we hired the husband of a hotel giftshop employee to take us around the island (he worked as a taxi driver!) and he picked us up bright and early. We went to a Barong Dance, visited a silver jewelry manufacturer, toured the rice paddies, watched laborers carve wooden masks and figurines, gazed upon a gorgeous volcanic lake while we ate lunch, and shopped in the artists community of Ubud. It took ALL DAY. The charge, including all tolls…$40. Total. So we tipped the guy an extra $40. He nearly cried. He invited us to his home to meet his family and eat (though circumstances prevented us from doing so) – he did come and pick us up to go to the airport the day we left (free of charge), brought us 2 masks his family had made, and bought us 2 beautiful flower wreaths to say thank you. It was amazing…and probably the highlight of our trip. I still have the dried wreaths – I framed them in shadow boxes and they hang in our foyer. The masks hang with the rest of our mask collection in the stairwell.
Sadly, we aren’t the adventurous eaters, and most nights we actually ate our dinners (3, I think) at the Kuta Beach Hard Rock Cafe. Kuta is where all of the tourists go…it’s a nice beach for surfing, I am told – and the shops are there and a few restaurants. I prefered where we stayed, though – it was very tranquil just like a vacation should be.
But back to food. I searched through the recipes online and came up with this…Prawn Nasi Goreng. It was delish – and super easy. After a week with a fussy baby (by myself, as Jon has been working out of town) I really appreciated the easy part. I can’t wait to see what everyone else did! Go check them out!
