French Fridays with Dorie…Gougeres

A couple of weeks ago, I introduced you to the new cooking group entitled French Fridays with Dorie, a group of several hundred Dorie Greenspan fans who are amped up to make our way through her new cookbook: Around My French Table.  I am so thrilled to be a part of yet another Dorie group!gugeres22

For our first recipe, Dorie chose Gougeres for us to bake.  As I mentioned in the previous post, gougeres are simply a cream puff dough (Also known as pate e choux), that has a large amount of grated cheese mixed in just before baking.  To the novice, a recipe like this one may seem daunting, but I assure you – it is not.  In fact, several of us had a Twitter Bake Up to bake them together.  I had mine done (Tweeting in between steps, even) in less than an hour, start to finish.  The bake time itself was half an hour, so really, really quick thing to throw together!

As a former member of Tuesdays With Dorie, many of us felt the desire each week to mix the recipe up a little and make it our own.  Because I knew how this dough played, I felt comfortable making a couple of small additions…onion powder and garlic powder.  I tossed these in with the addition of the flour, and it added just a little something extra.  They were delicious, and a wonderful break in the typical “bread with dinner” routine.
