So Long, Old Friend…
Today I weep for the loss of Paul Newman. There are not many actors I consider great, in fact, he may be the only one. I have loved him since I was young, and the older we both got, the more I loved him.
We spat watermelon seeds in “The Long Hot Summer”.
I was his crutch in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”
Together we ate hard boiled eggs in “Cool Hand Luke.”
I was a Hustler. I was Fast Eddie Felson.
I was Butch Cassidy.
And though he never knew me, he was my friend. Married for 50 years to Joanne Woodward, he was a true romantic. He was a charitable, honorable man. A legend. A hero.
And I will miss him.
